Late Friday 5’s: Fun in the Off Season
With the new gig, I have been a little busier than usual, so the Friday fives this week have turned into the “very early Saturday” fives. This week, we are tackling five ways to stay in shape in the off season.
1. Cyclocross: ‘Cross, is essentially, a cycling mix of mud, sweat and beers. You race through muck and mire and every so often have to leap off your rig and run a bit. It sounds awesome. While I have not tried it yet myself (hint, hint to pals with bikes that I could borrow) it seems to have the same addictive properties as chocolate. Everyone that I know who has tried it raves about it and always seems to be super happy, as evidenced by my pal Jen here, who was riding for HUP United.
2. Indoor Triathlon: When you are curious about tris but don’t want to go the full monty with a bike and a wetsuit, indoor tris are great. You swim as far as you can in a pool for 10-15 min, then ride a spin bike for half and hour and run as far as you can in 15-20 min. These events are getting pretty popular, and chances are you will be able to find one at your local gym.
3.Obstacle Races: It doesn’t matter which one you try: urbanathlon, warrior dash, muddy buddy… just get out there and get dirty. Jump over fire, dive into the mud pit, crawl over your competitors. Everyone gets a big fuzzy viking hat at the end and everyone parties down after that.
4. Trivia Challenges: As much a test for your mind as your body. These events pit you against competitors to solve puzzles, find clues and possible gaffle some things a la scavenger hunt. Most of them can be done walking too, so they are fun even if you are nursing an injury or late season burn out. Just bring your sense of humor and possibly a costume.
5.Innovative takes on familiar faves: The best example here I can think of is yoga. Everyone knows of it, most folks have had a bash at it. But I bet that you have never seen anti gravity yoga before! I gave it try this week and will try to publish a recap soon. In the meantime, meditate on all the fun to be had in the offseason and feel free to post your favorite ways to keep in shape.
